What is Jane’s Walk?

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs. The walks get people to tell stories about their communities, explore their cities, and connect with neighbours. Jane’s Walk was founded in Toronto in 2006 as a living, walking commemoration of Jane Jacobs and her legacy. Check out the cities around the world that hold a Jane’s Walk.
Who is Jane Jacobs?

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was a writer and activist best known for her writings about cities. Her first book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), upended the ideas of modernist city planning and offered a new vision of diverse cities made for and by the people who live in them. What happens on a Jane’s Walk?

Jane’s Walk events are free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. Held in cities worldwide each spring, they invite residents to explore neighbourhoods through stories, history, and lived experience. Volunteer guides lead small groups along sidewalks, parks, and streets, highlighting local culture, architecture, and social issues. Rather than formal lectures, walks encourage dialogue—participants share memories, ask questions, and reflect on how places shape daily life. Jane’s Walks foster connection, civic pride, and curiosity, helping people see their communities with fresh eyes and a deeper understanding of what makes them vibrant and inclusive.
Are there other ways to participate than walks?

While guided walks are at the heart of Jane’s Walk, many communities also create welcoming alternatives for those with mobility challenges. Indoors or in accessible venues, participants can gather for talks and storytelling sessions that bring neighbourhood history to life through personal memories and shared experiences. Panel discussions invite conversation about local design, accessibility, and community issues, while virtual walks use photos and maps to explore streets and stories from a seated setting. Creative workshops, such as map-making or sidewalk chalk art, offer hands-on ways to engage, and pop-up exhibits or casual meet-ups provide space to connect, reflect, and feel part of the community. You could always volunteer!
